The arena Sferisterio is an
important neoclassic building originally built as a stadium for
"Palla al Bracciale" (Armlet-ball), a sport in fashion in the
XIX century. Sferisterio was realized thanks to the generosity of 100 rich
family of Macerata that in 1819 offered the money to build the arena and
give it to the citizens.
Designed by the architect Ireneo Aleandri and inaugurated in 1829,
Sferisterio as a semi-elliptical shape with a high wall to close towards
the inner part.
Up to the Second World War it was used for equestrian events, jousts and
other sport events. After the War, thanks to the evocative architectonic
composition and to the perfect acoustics, Sferisterio slowly became
one of the most prestigious Opera Houses in Europe and one of
the most beautiful open-air theatres of Italy.
The Faggiolati project of the disappearing roof will help the
management of the open-air events.
